 Post subject: How to recognise a PC joypad?

I have only one other problem with the excellent VA5000 - how do I get it to recognise my joypad? I have a standard PC joypad plugged into a USB port, which shows up normally on my PC and which all PC games detect with no problems. I've got "Joystick Enabled" ticked, but no games seem to pick it up, even ones which definitely have joystick support (eg SWIV). Am I missing something obvious again?
