The new DELL Inspiron Mini 9 has the following spec:

Windows XP Home SP3 OR Linux: Ubuntu 8.04
Intel Atom (1.6GHz, 512KB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB)
1GB DDR2 SDRAM
Intel 965PM/GM Express Chipset
Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 950
8.9in LED display (1024X600)
hard drives - up to 16GB configured with a Solid State drive
integrated 10/100 LAN (RJ45)
15-pin VGA video connector
audio jacks (1-line out, 1 mic-in)
3-in-1 Media Card Reader
AC adaptor connector
integrated 1.3mp webcam
802.11g
Bluetooth
232mm x 27.2mm x 31.7mm

Is it posible to run VirtualRPC SE on it?

If so, would it be advisable?

I can't see any problem with running VirtualRPC on a machine with that spec (provided that it's running Windows XP). I would expect performance to be around mid range StrongARM (233Mhz) - although for some tasks this performance will be quite a bit greater.

Since it doesn't have a CD drive you will need either:

An external CD drive to install VRPC.
A "real" PC to copy the VirtualRPC install files to a memory stick (512Mb).

You will also need to make a small modification to the VRPC configuration. This is documented on the VirtualAcorn PC Knowledge Base (found from the Support link from the main website) - look for the "Asus Eee" article.

Hope that helps

Many thanks, Aaron.

I may now try and find one of these machines in the flesh to see if it's really a contender in respect to portability and usability. My local PCWorld didn't have one when I called in last week.

There a are a number of these SCC (Small Cheap Computers) appearing now so It's not suprising that PC World didn't have the Dell machine. Having said this in terms of physical size all of these machines (Asus, Dell, Acer, Elonex etc) are a pretty similar size - so if you are ahppy with the size and portability of one you are quite likely to be happy with any of them (from a weight/size perspective).
